Hats off to single parents

I’m into day four of looking after Luka on my own, and I have to say its more than a full-time job. All of a sudden, the perspective from which I have never seen life is etched in my soul. The mothers who freak out when their hardworking husbands say “well, all you do is stay at home and look after the kids.” Yeah right. Its relentless. A lot of fun - make no mistake about that - but they DO NOT STOP. They are little machines that have two speeds - 100mph forwards or sleep. You are always either preparing for something, doing something or cleaning up after something.

Added to which, Luka’s daytime naps are slowly but surely disappearing. Which means, from 7am until 7pm, you cannot really have any time to yourself, as there is always something to do or prepare, or wash up after. This is the first time the lid of my laptop has been open since Diane left on Wednesday, which is no bad thing to be honest.

So hats off to single parents. Anyone who can manage this and hold down anything else deserves my deepest respect.
